The winter here has been a little intense, so Charlotte and I decided to have a little indoor fun and signed up for a six week mommy & me ballet class! She had really started showing an interest in dancing and "Angelina Ballerina" books and shows, so when I saw this class being offered just down the street, it seemed perfect! The age range was 1-3, so I knew going into it that it wouldn't be too hard core. We had so much fun picking out her leotard, tutu and tights at the store! (No, fortunately the moms didn't have to wear that outfit too!) Charlotte would have been fine just buying the gear and strutting around in it all day, much less take the class! Ha! The first class was more like organized chaos, but it was by far the most adorable organized chaos I've ever seen! Pink tutus and little buns twirling around everywhere! After our first class, C and I celebrated with scones at a local bakery. Most Fridays, while we were at ballet, Matt and Gideon had guy time. Usually, that meant donuts for breakfast and baseball at the park or running errands together. If Matt had to work, G would just tag along with us (and make sure C was on task! Lol!).
The girls quickly got into Ms. Karla's class routine and they had fun learning basic ballet positions. The moms did all of the moves with the little ones as well. Just in the few classes we've had, I definitely have a new appreciation for dancers! It's hard work! C loved showing off what she'd learned to anyone who'd watch! She even got a few rounds of applause from strangers in a restaurant waiting area! Ha! She loves being the center of attention, and what else is there to do when waiting on your table than to bust out an arabesque or plei?! Charlotte really impressed me with how quickly she picked up each move. The girls learned first and second positions, releve, tondu, plie, saute, arabesque and sashay. They also learned how to keep beats while playing with instruments and how to use the barre. At our last class, C had to preform a few moves in front of the class with Ms. Karla and was given a bright pink certificate of excellence! Ms. Karla said she was ready for the big girl 3-5 year old class if she wanted to keep going :)
One of the best parts of the class was making new friends! I met another mom and her adorable little girl, Claire, who we really hit it off with! We grabbed sweets at a glamorous little bakery down the street together after class one day. We were all pretty taken with the place and I'm sure we'll be back. The girls had a blast hanging out and watching the bakers decorate cakes and cupcakes through a huge glass window while they scarfed down chocolates!
All in all, mommy and me ballet was a total success!
